Bugs!

c is our bug lover. He could spend hours collecting bugs (too many have met an untimely demise) and he seems to like learning about them just as much. Just recently he made this awesome little house for a caterpillar we found. It kind of reminds me of a fairy home! At least this caterpillar had an outdoor abode and hopefully had a beautiful end. Today we found this praying mantis in our house. We are very gentle and careful with these amazing bugs, they are hard to find. I wonder what enticed him to come in with us for a while? I know the kids enjoyed the break from school as we carefully moved him outside.

Line and Shape with young ones

Week Three of Tapestry encourages us to teach Line and Shape (from the Elements of Design). Coincidently, I was made aware of an awesome art lesson blog called Deep Space Sparkle. I really love her style and it is great for little ones! She happened to have two lessons on line and shape under her K-5 level. I keep a binder for each child with all their favorite art (or my favorite art!) they have done. So to add to their binder of art I made up two sheets of plain copy paper with the word Line and Shape written on the bottom. I introduced each element on a different day and we talked about different types of lines (dotted, straight, curvy, zig-zag, spiral, etc.) and they practiced on the open space.
